Many web sites have some kind of search engine, but all too often it fails to satisfy
its users. Come learn, from this long-standing practitioner, several alternative approaches
to designing a useful and usable search interface from the user's point of view.
This presentation includes a case study about the development of the search feature
for a group of health information web sites. The design process started with a series
of usability tests, working with general consumers looking for health information on
the web. It ended with a successful usability test of the search interface. In between,
four key personas were created to model different types of site users to guide the user
interface design.
This talk will focus on:
- Examples of different search models for different types of sites.
- A model for the user experience of search, including the design questions that the case study project raised.
- The guidelines and design patterns that were developed for the project.
- How user research was shaped into personas to guide the design process.
