In case you missed the international UPA conference in Munich, we’re pleased to bring a part of the conference to you.

You'll gain insights that are sure to have huge impact for the product. The effect of the research touches not only the usability of specific workflows and designs but carries major business and design implications that answer questions your product manager has asked for months, and some that she hasn’t even thought to ask. You decide, as usual, to write a report. The problem is nobody reads it. Or, if someone does read part of a research report, they forget the main findings and how they might apply to the product just as quickly as another email plops into their inbox. 

This talk suggest a different communication tool to help transfer the knowledge you as a researcher gained to your stakeholders - an Expo. An Expo is a full-day event during which stakeholders “experience” the research instead of reading about it. The Expo room included a self-guided “exhibition” of posters, artifacts, and videos. The study team as well as the immediate stakeholders host the Expo and are available to elaborate and discuss research findings and recommendations with the extended team.

Audience takeaways from this talk include learning how to:

 engage stakeholders beyond a written report and a presentation

create a visual experience of your findings

 turn traditional reporting practices into something more memorable and actionable

This talk discusses the reasons for having an Expo, it details the things you will need to have and to do to organize one, suggests ways to promote an Expo, and summarizes the outcomes and lessons learned.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This talk is geared towards experienced UX professionals who are familiar with conducting usability testing and research, who need their stakeholders to become more engaged, influenced, and persuaded by study findings and recommendations. If you dislike writing research reports and are pretty sure you’re the only one reading them, this talk is for you. If you’re new to the UX industry, this talk is an ideal opportunity to hear Google’s team members explain their approach to a solving a problem common within the UX community.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Tomer Sharon
Tomer is a user experience researcher at Google New York since 2008. A Bentley University graduate, he is also the founder and past president of UPA Israel, and a former UX Magazine editorial board member. In the field since 1999, Tomer worked as a researcher at Check Point Software Technologies in Israel, the company that invented the computer firewall.

John Webb
John Webb is a user experience researcher at Google providing insights to product teams including lab-based usability studies, field studies, and contextual interviews. His projects have focused on both the sell and buy-side of the online advertising space. Prior to joining Google, John was a senior user experience architect for DoubleClick where he worked in an Agile development environment helping to design and test the DoubleClick Advertising Exchange.
